You’ve booked your maternity photoshoot, and now you may be wondering what comes next. What should you wear? When should you schedule your session? Should you have your hair and makeup done? And what should you bring?
The good news is that you don’t need to have everything figured out before your maternity photoshoot.
With a little preparation and the right guidance, your session can feel relaxed, beautiful, and completely personalized to you. As a maternity and family photographer serving families throughout San Ramon, Danville, the East Bay, Contra Costa County, and the Bay Area, I help my clients plan the details ahead of time so they can relax and enjoy this special season of pregnancy.

Whether you’re planning an outdoor maternity session surrounded by natural beauty or a more intimate studio session, these tips will help you feel prepared before your maternity photoshoot.
One of the first questions expecting mothers ask is: When should I take my maternity photos?
For most pregnancies, I recommend planning your maternity session between 24 and 36 weeks. This is often when your pregnancy is beautifully visible while you may still feel relatively comfortable moving around and enjoying your session.
Every pregnancy is different, though, so there isn’t one perfect week for everyone.
If you’re expecting twins or multiples, you may want to schedule your maternity photos earlier. Your body and comfort level can change more quickly during a multiple pregnancy, so planning ahead gives you more flexibility.
The timing can also depend on whether you’re planning an outdoor or studio maternity session. For outdoor photos, we can consider the season, weather, and the best natural light. A studio session gives us more flexibility because we aren’t dependent on the weather.
The most important thing is to give yourself enough time to plan. Choosing your date early allows us to discuss your wardrobe, location, and overall vision without feeling rushed.

Your wardrobe can completely change the look and feel of your maternity photoshoot, so it’s worth giving this part of your preparation some thought.
When choosing what to wear for pregnancy photos, look for clothing that highlights your beautiful bump while allowing you to move comfortably.
Flowing dresses, fitted maternity gowns, soft fabrics, and elegant silhouettes can all photograph beautifully. Long, flowing fabrics can be especially gorgeous for outdoor maternity sessions, where movement adds an editorial and romantic feel to your images.
For a timeless look, neutral and soft tones work beautifully. Cream, beige, white, taupe, soft blush, and other muted shades tend to photograph beautifully without distracting from you and your pregnancy.
If your partner or children are joining you, their outfits don’t need to perfectly match yours. Instead, think about coordinating colors, textures, and overall style so everyone looks connected without looking overly coordinated.
And if you’re unsure about what to wear, that’s completely okay. I’m happy to help you with wardrobe planning and styling before your session, so you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
You don’t need an elaborate beauty routine before your maternity photoshoot, but a few simple details can help you feel polished and prepared.
If you’re having your hair and makeup professionally done, give yourself enough time before your session so you don’t feel rushed. Professional hair and makeup can also be a wonderful way to make your maternity session feel like a special experience.
A few days before your session, keep your skincare routine simple. This isn’t the time to experiment with new products that could potentially irritate your skin.
Don’t forget your hands and nails, either. Maternity photography often includes close-up images of your hands resting on your belly, so clean, natural-looking nails can be a beautiful finishing touch.
And most importantly, give yourself time to rest before your session. Pregnancy can be exhausting, and you don’t need to arrive feeling like you’ve spent the entire day getting ready.
Stay hydrated, eat before your session, and give yourself permission to slow down.

Your maternity photos don’t have to look a certain way. The best location is one that reflects you and the experience you want to create.
An outdoor maternity session can be beautiful if you love natural landscapes, open spaces, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature. Depending on the season and your vision, we can create photographs with a soft, romantic, or more editorial feel.
For an outdoor maternity photoshoot, the time of day also matters. Golden hour—the period shortly before sunset—creates beautiful, soft natural light and can add warmth and dimension to your photographs.
A studio maternity session offers a completely different experience. It provides privacy, a controlled environment, and beautiful consistent lighting without having to worry about changing weather conditions.
Neither option is better than the other. It simply depends on the look and experience you envision for your maternity photos.
If you’re not sure which is right for you, we can talk through the options together.
You don’t need to bring a suitcase full of things to your session. Keeping it simple is usually best.
Depending on your session, you may want to bring:
If your partner or children are joining you, remember to bring anything they may need as well—especially snacks and water for little ones.
The goal isn’t to bring everything you own. It’s simply to have a few practical items available so everyone can stay comfortable and relaxed.
One of the biggest misconceptions about maternity photoshoots is that you need to know how to pose before you arrive.
You don’t. That’s my job.
During your maternity photoshoot, I’ll guide you through flattering poses and natural movements so you don’t have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look.
We’ll create a combination of more directed portraits and natural moments. Some images may focus on your beautiful pregnancy silhouette, while others capture the connection between you and your partner or the excitement of becoming a family.
If your partner or children are part of the session, I’ll guide them as well so the photographs feel connected and natural rather than overly posed.
And throughout the session, communication is important. If something doesn’t feel comfortable, let me know. Pregnancy is not the time to push through discomfort for a photograph.
Your comfort always comes first.

Your maternity photoshoot is about more than taking beautiful photographs. It’s about preserving a chapter of your life that only lasts for a short time.
The weeks of pregnancy can feel long while you’re living through them, but once your baby arrives, you’ll be amazed at how quickly this season becomes a memory.
That’s why I believe preparation should make your experience easier, not more complicated.
Choose your session timing early, plan a wardrobe that feels like you, give yourself time to get ready, and communicate with your photographer about what you want from your session. The rest can be guided along the way.
After photographing expecting mothers, one thing I’ve learned is that the most meaningful maternity photographs aren’t necessarily the ones with the most elaborate styling or perfect location. They’re the photographs that allow you to remember how this season felt—the anticipation, the connection, and the love you already have for the little person you’re waiting to meet.
Whether you’re planning maternity photos in San Ramon, Danville, the East Bay, Contra Costa County, or elsewhere in the Bay Area, I’m here to make the experience calm, guided, and personal from planning through your final artwork.
Ready to document this beautiful chapter? I’d love to help you plan a maternity session that feels completely yours.
