Preparing for newborn photos doesn’t have to be complicated. From what to bring and what to wear to feeding your baby and preparing for a relaxed studio experience, here’s everything you need to know How to Prepare for Newborn Photos Before Your Session.
Everything is prepared before you arrive, so you can focus on your baby and your family.
Your newborn session takes place in a clean, quiet, cozy, and fully equipped studio in San Ramon, designed with your baby’s comfort in mind.
I’ll take care of the styling and guide you through the session from beginning to end. You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about what happens next—I’ve got you.
Almost nothing. Bring your baby, your usual diapering essentials, and anything you normally need for feeding.
If your baby takes a bottle, I recommend bringing a little extra milk or formula. Babies often eat more frequently during a 2–4 hour newborn session than they typically do at home, so it’s better to have more than you think you’ll need.
If there’s a sentimental item you’d love to include, such as a family heirloom or special blanket, feel free to bring that too. And I always recommend bringing an extra shirt for parents—because newborns have a way of keeping us on our toes. 🤍
Even if your baby doesn’t normally use a pacifier, I recommend bringing one to your newborn photography session.
A pacifier can make it much easier to calm your baby during transitions between poses or when they need a little extra soothing.
If your baby doesn’t take a pacifier, that’s completely fine. We’ll simply use other ways to soothe and comfort them.

The best thing you can do before your newborn photography session is keep your baby’s routine as normal as possible.
You may hear advice about keeping your baby awake before a session, but there’s no need to exhaust or overstimulate them. If your baby is happy and sleeping, let them sleep. If they’re awake, that’s perfectly okay too.
A little cuddling, quiet interaction, or a bath before leaving home can be a nice way to spend some time together. The goal isn’t to arrive with a perfectly sleepy baby. The goal is simply to arrive with a baby who is calm, content, and comfortable.

If you live close to my San Ramon studio, I recommend feeding your baby shortly before you leave home. If you’re traveling from farther away, you may prefer to feed your baby when you arrive.
Either option works—and please don’t worry if your baby wants to eat again once you’re here. Newborns often need to feed more than once during a session, and feeding, cuddling, and soothing are all a normal part of newborn photography.
For a studio newborn session, I love simple, neutral clothing that keeps the focus on your family and the connection between you.
Think cream, white, beige, soft taupe, and warm neutral tones. Solid colors and subtle textures photograph beautifully and create timeless images that won’t feel dated years from now.
And don’t worry about finding the perfect outfit on your own. I offer a complimentary wardrobe for moms, and I’ll help you choose something that feels comfortable and photographs beautifully.
Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel like yourself. These photographs aren’t about looking perfect—they’re about being there with your baby.

When you arrive at my San Ramon studio, we’ll take a few minutes to settle in and make sure your baby is comfortable. If they need to eat, have a diaper change, or simply need some cuddles, there’s no rush.
Once your baby is ready, I’ll guide you through the session and take care of the posing and styling. You can simply relax, follow my direction, and enjoy this time with your family.
Plan for approximately 3–4 hours for your newborn photography session.
Newborn sessions take time because babies set the pace. There may be feeding breaks, diaper changes, cuddles, soothing, or moments when we simply need to wait for your baby to settle.
The extra time allows me to create a beautiful variety of portraits without rushing you or your baby.
Your session may include:
The goal isn’t simply to photograph what your baby looks like. It’s to preserve what this moment in your family’s life feels like.

Once we begin, I’ll guide you through everything—from how to hold your baby to where to sit and how to interact naturally. You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about what to do next.
Follow my direction, trust the process, and let yourself be present with your baby. Some of the most beautiful photographs happen in the little moments between poses—the way you look at your baby, hold their tiny hand, or simply enjoy being together.
Your only job is to be there. I’ll take care of the rest.
Preparing for your newborn photography session doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. Bring your baby, the essentials you normally need, and yourself. I’ll take care of the rest.
From styling and posing to soothing and guiding you through the session, my goal is to make your experience calm, comfortable, and enjoyable from beginning to end.
Your baby will only be this little once. Let’s preserve these first moments beautifully.

The ideal time for a newborn photography session is usually within the first 5–15 days after birth. Booking during pregnancy helps secure your preferred date and gives us time to plan your session.
You don’t need to bring many items. At FrameIt Bay Area, I provide carefully selected props, outfits, and wraps, while you can bring any meaningful personal items you’d like included in your baby’s photographs.
Fussy moments are completely normal, and there’s no need to worry. We take breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing your baby, allowing the session to move at a comfortable pace.
