Six month photos capture a wonderful stage in your baby’s first year, when their personality is beginning to shine and they are becoming more expressive and interactive. They may be sitting, reaching, smiling, laughing, or simply discovering the world around them. This stage changes quickly, making it especially meaningful to preserve before your baby moves into the next chapter.
There is something incredibly special about the first year of a baby’s life.
The changes happen so quickly that sometimes it feels as though you blink and your newborn has suddenly become a completely different little person. During those first twelve months, your baby grows, develops new abilities, and begins to show more and more of their unique personality.
That is why I love six-month sessions so much. At around six months, your baby is often in a beautiful stage between the sleepy newborn days and the exciting milestones of the first year. They are becoming more expressive, curious about their surroundings, and much more engaged with the people they love.
Their little personality is starting to show.
And while there is no single “perfect” age for photographs, six months gives us so many wonderful things to capture.

A newborn session and a six-month session are completely different experiences because your baby has changed so much in such a short amount of time.
As a newborn, your baby is mostly sleepy and dependent on you. Six months later, you may have a baby who smiles when you walk into the room, reaches for you, laughs at your voice, grabs their toes, or gives you a very serious look when they are deciding whether they approve of something.
Those expressions are priceless.
At this stage, I can capture much more of your baby’s emerging personality. Some photographs may be beautifully posed, while others are simply about letting your baby interact with the environment and respond naturally.
I don’t want every image to look the same. I want your gallery to show who your baby was at six months.
Maybe they had the biggest smile. Maybe they were especially curious. Maybe they were serious and observant. Maybe they loved being held by Mom or Dad.
All of those things are part of their story.
If you’ve ever looked back at photographs of your children, you probably already know how quickly they change during the first year.
The difference between a newborn and a one-year-old can be astonishing. But what makes this period particularly remarkable is that the changes aren’t limited to physical growth.
Your baby’s face changes. Their body becomes stronger. They develop greater control over their movements and may begin sitting, reaching, rolling, crawling, pulling themselves up, and eventually standing or walking. At the same time, their personality becomes more defined as they learn to communicate and interact with the people around them.
The amount of development that happens during the first twelve months is remarkable, with changes that can feel especially dramatic compared with those of later childhood.
That is why I believe documenting more than one stage of the first year can be so meaningful.
When you place a newborn photograph beside a six-month portrait and then a one-year photograph, you don’t just see three pretty pictures. You see your baby’s transformation.

Despite the name, your baby’s six-month session doesn’t have to happen on the exact day they turn six months old.
Every baby develops at their own pace, so I don’t want parents to feel as though their baby needs to reach a particular milestone before we can create beautiful photographs.
Some babies are sitting independently at six months. Others are still working toward it. Some are very active, while others are happy to sit quietly and observe everything around them.
All of these stages are worth photographing.
I generally recommend planning your session around the six-month stage rather than waiting until your baby reaches a specific milestone. Booking ahead also gives us more flexibility when choosing a date that works well for your family.
And if your baby happens to reach a new milestone just before the session, even better—we can incorporate it.
When parents start thinking about six-month photo ideas, they sometimes imagine a very specific set of poses. But I prefer to keep the session flexible and let your baby’s personality guide us.
We can create beautiful individual portraits, photographs of your baby sitting independently or with support, close-ups of their little hands and feet, and expressive images that reveal their personality.
We can also include parents.
In fact, I highly encourage it.
A photograph of your baby sitting alone is beautiful, but a photograph of your baby reaching toward Mom or smiling at Dad tells a completely different story. These interactions are part of what makes milestone photography personal to your family.
We can also incorporate a favorite toy, meaningful item, or simple milestone detail if you’d like. My preference is always for the photographs to remain timeless rather than overly dependent on a particular trend.

One of the things I want parents to know is that you don’t need to prepare everything yourself.
I provide everything needed for a beautiful, cohesive milestone session, including props, styling pieces, and outfits for your baby.
You don’t have to spend time shopping for the perfect photography outfit for your baby or searching for props that coordinate with the session. I take care of those details so you can simply arrive and enjoy the experience.
I also offer a complimentary wardrobe for Mom if she would like to be included in the photographs.
And I strongly encourage parents to be photographed with their baby.
I know that many moms don’t necessarily feel camera-ready during this stage of motherhood. But these photographs aren’t just for today. They are for your child to look back on years from now.
Your baby won’t care whether you felt you looked perfect that day. What matters is that you were there.
I’ll gently guide you through the photographs so you don’t have to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands. The goal is to create photographs that feel natural, beautiful, and connected.
No.
The term “sitter session” is sometimes used for six-month photography, but your baby does not have to be sitting completely independently for us to have a beautiful session.
Every baby develops differently, and I work with the stage your baby is actually in.
If they are sitting confidently, we’ll photograph that. If they are still developing their balance, we can use appropriate support and create beautiful portraits in other positions as well.
There are so many expressions and interactions we can capture even before your baby can sit independently.
The most important thing is not reaching a particular milestone.
It’s preserving your baby as they are right now.

You don’t need to do anything complicated before your six-month session.
I recommend keeping your baby’s usual routine as much as possible and making sure they have an opportunity to eat and rest before the session. But even with the best planning, babies are unpredictable—and that’s perfectly fine.
There may be a feeding break, a diaper change, a little fussiness, or a few minutes when your baby simply wants to be held.
We take our time.
Because so many of the session details are taken care of for you, there is much less to worry about when you arrive at the studio. You can simply focus on enjoying this time with your baby.
My goal is for the session to feel like an enjoyable experience for your family, not another item on your already-long list of things to organize.
The six-month stage can feel like an in-between period.
You have already documented the newborn days, and perhaps you’re thinking about a first birthday or cake smash session. It can be tempting to skip the months in between.
But this stage is so different from both.
Your baby is growing and changing almost every week. Their features, expressions, movements, and personality are evolving incredibly quickly. Before you know it, the baby who was once sitting in front of your camera will be pulling themselves up, standing, and getting ready to celebrate their first birthday.
Six months is here for such a short time.
That is exactly why it deserves to be photographed.
Years from now, you may not remember every detail of this particular week or month. But when you look at your six-month photographs, you’ll remember the way your baby looked at you, the expressions they made, how tiny their hands were, and the little personality that was just beginning to emerge.
Those are the memories worth preserving.

You don’t need to purchase a special outfit just for the session. I provide baby outfits and styling options, making it easy to create a timeless and cohesive gallery.
If you’d like to be photographed with your baby, I provide a complimentary wardrobe for Mom. I’ll help you choose an option that photographs beautifully and coordinates with the overall style of your session.
Absolutely. I encourage parents and siblings to participate. These photographs aren’t only about documenting how your baby looks—they are about documenting the relationships your baby is growing up surrounded by.
That’s completely okay. We aren’t trying to force a particular expression. Some babies are naturally smiley, while others are more serious or observant. I want to capture your baby’s real personality rather than manufacture a reaction.
Yes. I provide props, styling pieces, and outfits for your baby, so you don’t need to bring anything from home unless you have a meaningful item you’d like to include.
I recommend reaching out before your baby turns six months so we have more flexibility when choosing your session date. Since every baby develops differently, we can also discuss the timing that makes the most sense for your baby.

Six months is one of those stages that can be difficult to fully appreciate while you’re living through it. You’re busy feeding, changing, comforting, playing, and watching your baby discover something new almost every day.
Then suddenly, they’re not quite that baby anymore.
That’s why I believe milestone photography is about more than documenting a birthday or checking a particular developmental milestone off a list. It’s about preserving the small details of childhood that disappear surprisingly quickly.
At my San Ramon studio, I take care of the details and gently guide you through the session, including parent and family portraits if you’d like to be part of the story. I provide props, styling pieces, and baby outfits, along with a complimentary wardrobe for moms.
Because your baby will keep growing.
And someday, these photographs will be one of the ways you remember just how little they once were.
If you’re ready to preserve this beautiful stage, I’d love to create six-month photos in San Ramon that capture not only how your baby looks today, but also the personality and connection that make this moment uniquely yours.
